CFA offers free home visits for people in the community who are most at risk of fire.

These visits are for people who are more at risk of death, injury or losing their home in a bushfire or home fire. Their increased risk could be due to where they live, or their circumstances.

Why CFA does home visits

Some community members need more help to protect themselves from bushfires and home fires. They might find it difficult to attend CFA workshops, meetings, and other fire safety initiatives in their community for a number of reasons.

CFA offers in-person advice at homes and properties to make sure these people can get the information so that they can:

  • be aware of their fire risk
  • make fire plans
  • prepare their properties
  • protect themselves against fire.

Who can receive a home visit?

Specific groups are targeted for each program. These visits are specifically for people who are more at risk of death, injury or losing their home due to either bushfire or home fire. CFA decides who to visit based on where they live, or their circumstances.

How you know you're going to be visited

CFA generally reaches out to targeted households by putting a flyer in their letterbox to let them know they will soon get a knock on the door from a CFA member. You can choose to accept or decline the service.

Sometimes people are referred to a program or request a home visit themselves, but this is not as common.

Who will do the home visit?

Trained CFA Members who are covered by insurance do home visits for our programs.

Property Advice Visit Service

  • 15-30 minutes

The Property Advice Visit Service is a free service offered to people living in the highest risk of bushfire in Victoria. CFA members visit residents at home, offering practical ways to reduce their fire risk and guidance on fire plans.

Smoke Alarm Installation Service

  • 30 - 60 minutes

This free service involves trained CFA members visiting people in their homes to install smoke alarms. It is designed to reach community members who are at higher risk of death or injury in a house fire because they may not have working smoke alarms.

Some people are more at-risk of injury or death in a home fire or bushfire. You or the person you care for might be at higher risk in a fire if they couldn't respond quickly to fire and evacuate without support. CFA has developed a number of free e-learning modules and in-home services to help reduce their risk.
