Understand what you can and can’t do

Victoria experiences heightened fire risk during warmer months, and the CFA declares Fire Danger Periods (FDPs) by municipality to restrict open-air fires and reduce the chance of fire ignition. When conditions are particularly severe, Total Fire Bans (TFBs) are declared, during which all open-air fires are legally prohibited and carry heavy penalties if breached.

Fire Danger Period

The Fire Danger Period is when CFA restricts the use of fire in the community. This is to help prevent fires from starting. CFA declares the Fire Danger Period for each municipality (shire or council) at different times in the lead up to the fire season. It depends on the amount of rain, grassland curing rate and other local conditions.

Permit to burn

Fire permits are issued to businesses and individuals who need to use fire to conduct work or an activity. They provide an exemption to laws during a period when fire restrictions are in place or a day of Total Fire Ban (TFB) with specific conditions applied.
