High rise fire safety

If a fire has started in your building

  1. Stay calm and get out as quickly as possible. Every second counts in a fire.
  2. Get down low and stay out of the smoke.
  3. If it's safe to do so, close all doors behind you as you leave.
  4. Call out to other people and let them know there is a fire as you go.
  5. Don't use lifts, use emergency exits or fire stairs.
  6. Get out and stay out.
  7. Go to the official Emergency Assembly Area or safe place outside the building.
  8. Call Triple-Zero 000 from a mobile phone or a neighbour’s phone. Ask for fire.

If the fire is small and close to your location, you can try to put it out with the firefighting equipment provided. Only do this if you know how to work the equipment, feel confident, and physically and mentally able to do so safely.

If you are trapped in your apartment

  1. Stay calm.
  2. Close all doors between you and the fire to stop smoke entering your apartment.
  3. Call Triple Zero 000. Tell the operator exactly where you are in the building. Follow their advice.
  4. Go to a window and attract the attention of firefighters.

Put cigarettes out properly

A single cigarette can start a major fire in a multi-storey building. Make sure you put cigarettes out properly.

Test smoke alarms

Test smoke alarms monthly and clean them regularly with a duster or vacuum cleaner. Smoke alarms provide a vital early warning and can allow extra time to escape if there is a fire in your apartment.

Preventing fires on balconies

Balconies are a useful extra space when you live in an apartment, but they can also be a place where fires are likely to start. Follow the steps below to stay fire safe.

  1. Check with your owners corporation if you are allowed to use a BBQ on your balcony before you have one.
  2. Keep balconies clear of rubbish and clutter.
  3. Keep everything on your balcony one metre away from your air conditioning unit.
  4. Position BBQs and balcony heaters away from other objects, including walls and anything that could burn.
  5. Store gas bottles outside, upright and away from heat. Turn them off when not in use.
  6. If you smoke, always put out your cigarettes properly and use heavy, high-sided ashtrays so they don't tip over.
  7. Have a dry powder fire extinguisher nearby and use it if there is a small fire and you feel confident to do so.

Combustible Cladding

Cladding is the outside skin of a building. It is used to provide insulation and weather resistance, and to improve the appearance of buildings.

Certain types of cladding may pose a risk for building occupants, as well as the community. This is because, these types of cladding can increase the rate a fire spreads.

The Victorian Building Authority have identified buildings which require inspection as part of a statewide cladding audit. If you have concerns about the cladding on your building, visit the Victorian Building Authority or call them on 1300 815 127.

Keep emergency exits clear

It's important not to store things in corridors or staircases, as this can block escape routes and stop firefighters from being able to do their job in an emergency.

Always make sure firefighting equipment, such as extinguishers and fire hoses are easy to access and not blocked by other things. Never store items in fire equipment cupboards.

It is illegal to prop or wedge open fire or smoke doors, because they're designed to stop the spread of smoke and fire.

Fire prevention and owners corporations

Building owners and owners corporations are responsible for maintaining Essential Safety Measures, which includes exit doors and signs, emergency lighting, sprinkler systems and fire hydrants.
