Fired Up English (EAL program)

Who is it for?

English as Additional Language (EAL) students, level 0-1 and 2-4.

Why the Fired Up English program exists

Multicultural communities can be more at risk of fire due to different cultural understandings and language proficiency.

Fired Up English gives EAL teachers the opportunity to teach English and share real life, practical fire safety information at the same time.

Which topics are covered?

The topics cover three main areas, across 12 lessons:

• Understanding CFA:
  • the role of CFA
  • fire science including the fire triangle.
• Home fire safety:
  • home fire risks
  • smoke alarms
  • escape plans
  • calling for help (000)
  • cooking safely
  • fire blankets.
• Outdoor Fire Safety:
  • bushfire and grassfire risks
  • BBQ fire safety
  • fire danger ratings
  • total fire bans
  • preparing your property.

Teaching the unit

Fired Up English includes 12 lessons, which can be delivered in the classroom by an EAL teacher.

Each lesson plan includes a range of activities for each topic. Teachers can pick the ones which suit their class best.

CFA presenters or brigade members may be available to support some lesson content throughout the program.

• You can pick and choose which lessons you want to deliver.
• You don't have to do them in order.

Fired Up English includes:

• fire safety information
• keywords and images
• videos
• audio files
• worksheets
• quizzes
• discussion questions
• classroom activities
• other resources including news articles, brochures and pamphlets.

Fired Up English was developed in partnership with Chisholm Institute.
They provided subject matter expertise in relation to EAL teaching requirements, lesson content, lesson topics and activities.
