It is important that you declare any medical conditions during the registration process so that CFA can provide appropriate support and determine the roles you may be able to perform safely.
If you declare a medical condition, you will be required to complete a medical assessment.
Depending on the medical conditions you declare, this may involve:
- having your treating medical practitioner provide information about your medical history, current condition and any treatment plans
- completing a medical history questionnaire, and/or
- attending an assessment with CFA's external medical services provider.
Your treating medical practitioner does not determine your suitability for a role within CFA. Their role is to provide information about your medical condition. The CFA Medical Review Officer will assess this information using a comprehensive assessment framework and determine your suitability for CFA roles.
When you reach this stage of the process, CFA will provide further instructions and advise you of any required next steps.
In some cases, you may be asked to visit your treating medical practitioner as part of the assessment process. Please note that any fees charged by your treating medical practitioner, as well as any associated travel costs, are the responsibility of the applicant.
If CFA requires you to attend an assessment with its external medical services provider, CFA will arrange and cover the cost of that appointment.
Some medical conditions may require additional review due to the nature of firefighting activities and the associated risks. If this applies to you, CFA will provide further instructions and arrange any required assessments.
If a medical assessment determines that you are not suitable for operational firefighting duties, CFA, together with your Brigade, will work with you to explore other volunteer opportunities that may be suitable for your circumstances and skills, taking into account the Brigade's needs and available roles.
