Which topics are covered?

Community Fireguard is designed to help you work together with your neighbours to be more prepared for fires in your area.

There are 6 x 2 hour sessions:

Session One: Introduction to Community Fireguard

Get to know your CFA facilitator and other local group participants. Learn about your local bushfire risk and how fire services respond to a fire.

Session Two: Living in a high-risk environment

Think about your particular household and personal circumstances, and what to expect in the event of a bushfire.

Session Three: Personal safety and resilience

Learn about the importance of personal safety and resilience. Preparing and planning for bushfire is a complex and demanding activity, but safe outcomes are possible.

Session Four: Preparing your property for bushfire

Learn about what you can do to give your home more chance of surviving a bushfire, and what a safer place to shelter can look like if you can't leave as planned.

Session Five: Creating your bushfire plans

You'll learn how to create an adaptable, realistic bushfire/grassfire plan that meets your needs.

Session Six: Reviewing your bushfire plans

In this session, all group members bring back their bushfire plans and ‘put them on the table’ for discussion.

Optional Session: Stay and Defend

CFA also offers an optional Stay and Defend' one day workshop as part of Community Fireguard. This is recommended for anyone considering defending their home in a fire.

About Community Fireguard

Hear from trained CFA members and group participants about how Community Fireguard works, and the benefits of being involved in the program.

What happens in Community Fireguard?

This free program is facilitated by a trained CFA member. Meetings are held on people’s property, road verges or reserves, local community centres or halls and sometimes at your local fire station, at a time that’s convenient for the group - usually on weekends or in the evening.

The program includes 6 x 2 hour sessions with a CFA member, including group discussion and hands-on activities. You are encouraged to develop and share your fire plan with other members of the group.

Groups then continue to meet six monthly to annually, to ensure networks are strong and knowledge is regularly refreshed and updated. Groups can decide how often they meet.
