Fire risk is greatest at night when you are asleep. When we sleep we can lose our sense of smell and smoke can put you into a deeper sleep. Without a working smoke alarm you may not wake up in time to safely escape.

- Fire risk is greatest at night when you are asleep. When we sleep we can lose our sense of smell and smoke can put you into a deeper sleep. Without a working smoke alarm you may not wake up in time to safely escape.
- Smoking in bed is very dangerous. Never smoke in bed.
- Never leave portable heaters and fireplaces unattended; turn off heaters and make sure fireplace embers are extinguished before leaving the room.
- Ensure powered electrical appliances like hairdryers, hair straighteners and laptops are not left on bedding.
- Turn off heaters and other electrical appliances before going to bed.
- Turn electric blankets on 30 minutes before getting into bed and turn off as you get into bed.
- Keep electric blankets flat with controls at the side of the bed. Regularly check for broken or worn wiring.
- Only purchase heat bags with instructions. Do not use heat bags as bed warmers, they can overheat and start a fire.
Before Bed/Night Routine Tips
Have a routine before you go to sleep every night, which includes:
- Switch off all electrical appliances – do not charge mobile phones, tablets or laptops overnight
- Don’t put washing machine or tumble dryer on overnight
- Turn off heaters
- Make sure all candles and cigarettes are out properly
