State Championships - Celebrating CFA

The Firefighter State Championships have a rich tradition and are an integral part of CFA.

'Championship' events are a chance for the community to find out more about CFA in a fun, family-friendly environment.

Planning for the 2024 State Firefighter Championships is well underway.

History

VFBV State Championships are one of CFA's proudest and longest traditions. They have been held annually for almost 150 years with the first State Championship held in Melbourne in 1874. The only cancellations have been due to WWI, WWII and the COVID19 pandemic in 2020.

In the 1950s, the Rural State Championships were developed to reflect the unique skills of rural brigades.

The competitions started out as 'Demonstrations' with the introduction of hose reels into the fire service in the mid 1800s. This was to assist in getting hose and other necessary equipment to the scene of a fire faster.

Brigades soon find that competing with other brigades improved their training and efficiency. The State Championship became the peak of the season's competitions conducted by districts and associations across the state.

Purpose

Our local competitions and State Championships shows the endurance and reliability of many of our brigades. Today's competitors come from a long generational commitment to 'having a go'. Competitions and Championships have demonstrated a means of promoting leadership in our members. And have always been an opportunity to promote volunteerism locally.

In our modern CFA we see our local competitions and State Championships to promote general wellbeing and to focus on fitness.

As we look ahead we see our local competitions and State Championships as an important opportunity to:

  • bring the CFA family together in a spirit of celebration
  • build lasting friendships and relationships between communities across Victoria and
  • share this with our service delivery partners and the broader community.
