How will I know when CFA is recruiting?

It's recommended that you 'Like' the CFA Facebook page, and continue to monitor this website for announcements about when the recruitment system goes live.

What do I need to have ready when I apply?

Before you start your application you need to have the following ready to go:

  • Current resume with a full work history
  • A scan of your drivers' licence
  • Referee details.

What if I have applied before?

If you have previously applied and been unsuccessful, you can re-apply. However, be aware that you are not permitted more than three unsuccessful attempts at any one stage of the recruitment process.  For example, if you have already tried the Beep Test three times and failed to meet the benchmark level of 9.6, you are not permitted to apply again.

Is there an age limit?

No. However, you must have a full, manual driver’s license to apply (You are ineligible if you have a probationary license).

How long is the recruitment process?

The recruitment process can take between four months and twelve months depending on the number of vacancies to fill. Applicants may be placed on different schedules aligned with separate interview periods for different recruit courses.

I don't have any firefighting experience - can I still apply?

Yes you can. All training is provided, and firefighting is not a prerequisite. CFA selects applicants on the basis of their motivation, aptitude and behaviours.

Recruits come to CFA from all kinds of backgrounds, including people who previously worked in offices or admin. Provided you meet the suitability and eligibility requirements the only pre-requisite is a willingness to learn and work hard.

What level of education do I need?

There are no minimum educational requirements to become a career firefighter, but your literacy, numeracy and mechanical reasoning ability will be tested as part of the Aptitude Test. 

CFA expects that all career firefighters will undertake a continual process of learning. Your capacity to participate in learning is evaluated in the recruitment process basic aptitude tests and your work/training history.

Requirements and testing

Do I need a truck license to be a career firefighter?

Yes: a Synchromesh license is required.

Only candidates who have received and accepted an offer for a place on the recruit course need to obtain this licence. While CFA will reimburse the costs of obtaining this licence, you will need to pay upfront out of your own pocket.

If you do not currently have a heavy rigid license, it is a good idea to look at what is involved to make sure you will be able to obtain the licence in a timely manner.

Can I do anything to prepare for the aptitude assessment?

Make sure you have read through the Aptitude Preparation Guide. The ACER Shop is one supplier that has produced a number of practice tests.

Why do I have to run the beep test?

The reason CFA conducts the beep test is to ensure that applicants have sufficient cardiovascular fitness, strength and stamina to perform the many varied tasks involved in firefighting and rescue.

I have never done the Beep Test before and I’m not sure I will be able to pass the benchmark.

The best way to gauge your current level against the benchmark is to download or buy the test and try it at home. Most people will need to put in regular training to achieve the 9.6 benchmark score. Use a partner, friend or trainer to help you and keep you motivated.

Are the recruitment benchmarks the same for women as they are for men?

Yes. The benchmarks (testing levels) are the same for everyone, regardless of gender, age or cultural background. It is an expectation of our community that all career firefighters have the same level of competence and capability.

Volunteering & Recruitment

Is being a CFA volunteer recognised during the recruitment process?

Your experience as a CFA volunteer may prove valuable when it comes to attempting the Physical Ability Test (as you will be familiar with processes and equipment) and during interviews, where it may be an advantage to describe how you have reacted or behaved in emergency situations.

I am a volunteer and have completed minimum skills – will I still have to complete the entire recruit course?

Yes. It is important that all recruits receive the same training with the same equipment.

Recruit Course

How long is the recruit training course?

As of March 2015, the duration of the recruit course is approximately 19 weeks.

If I am successful, when will I start my course?

Details regarding the start date for upcoming recruit course/s will be communicated to applicants early in each recruitment process.

Where does the recruit course take place?

Recruit courses take place at the Victorian Emergency Management Training College (VEMTC) Craigieburn.

Will I need to do written work during the recruit course?

Yes. The course comprises of intensive practical and theoretical (classroom-based), and you’ll be expected to complete written assignments, homework and tests.  To graduate, you will need to attain set benchmarks for all practical and theoretical assessments.

Will I need to live away for from home during the Recruit Course?

The recruit training course has a 'four days on, four days off' structure. A decision regarding the provision of accommodation is made prior to each Recruit Course. As soon as it is known this information will be communicated to you during the recruitment process.
