Types of Medals / Awards

Medals are awarded to volunteers and career staff for their contributions and efforts throughout their dedicated service in CFA.

The list of medals awarded:

King's Polie and Fire Service Medal

King's Police and Fire Service Medal (KPFSM)

One of the older awards, instituted in 1909 by King Edward VII but discontinued in 1954 when separate medals for police and for fire service were substituted. It was replaced by the Queen’s Police Medal and the Queen's Fire Service Medal.

It is no longer available and has been replaced in Australian honours with the Australian Police Medal and the Australian Fire Service Medal

Queen's Fire Service Medal

Queen’s Fire Service Medal (QFSM)

Instituted on 19 May 1954 by Queen Elizabeth II, for issue to members of recognised fire services in Britain and Commonwealth countries.  Awarded for ‘acts of exceptional courage and skill at the cost of their lives’ or for the ‘exhibition of conspicuous devotion to duty’.

It is no longer available as it has been replaced by the Australian Fire Service Medal

Australian Fire Service Medal

Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM)

The Australian Fire Service Medal recognises distinguished service by members of Australian fire services. It is awarded to paid and volunteer members for distinguished service. Prior to 1989 distinguished service in the Australian Fire Service was recognised by the Queen’s Fire Service Medal (QFSM).

Valour Medal

Valor Medal

Available to volunteers and career staff for acts of bravery. May be awarded to any officer of the CFA or volunteer officer or member of any brigade for saving (or attempting to save) human life at grave risk to his/her own life.

National Medal

National Medal

Available to operational members in approved organisations that protect life and property at some risk to their members, this award recognises prolonged exposure to hazard in the service of the community.
